Many, many, many years ago, Dr Ian did have hair, red hair. This was of course, when he was in his High School years, and heading to Japan to study on exchange.
He was 14 years old, (almost 15,) and an adventure was what he was embarking upon. Dr Ian, was very lucky in the assignment of his lovely host family in Yokohama, with whom he spent all his weekends whilst in Japan. During the week though, he boarded at the prestigious and well known, Yamate School, along with his fellow International Exchange Students from Canada, New Zealand, USA and Australia.
It was a learning curb for the young teen, as when he arrived at Yamate, he spoke not a word of Japanese.
But he proved to be a quick learner and a good student, spending time with classmates and learning the customs and language of the host country.
This period of time overseas had a life long impact on Dr Ian, he still maintains a relationship with his foster mother in Japan and the family there, visiting Yokohama and also attending various school reunions over the years.
Always keen to keep up to date with his language skills, he welcomes members of Japan's expatriate community for treatment and is quick to jump at the chance to speak with them as well. He is proud to provide the best dental treatment in Melbourne to the Japanese community when they call to make an appointment, we even have a Japanese staff member, Atsuko-san on staff to sort out insurance and linguistic challenges for our patients.
Dr Ian's love of Japanese cuisine has also endured, and he likes nothing better than to settle down for a quiet dinner including all his favourite dishes: Sashimi, Agadashi Tofu and Edamame.
